International Women’s Day 2024 Inspire Inclusion

To celebrate International Women’s Day 2024, we asked Marnie a few questions about what inclusion means to her (and of course what beer she drinks).

What is your role at Spotty?

I am an owner and co-founder and have worn many (many!) hats at Spotty since the beginning. While I haven’t worn the brewer’s hat, I am very happy to pop on the quality control hat to taste test!

I have organised many of our events and festivals over the years, creating an inviting and fun environment for people to engage with us. I am known for my ability to plan, organise, and completely over-think things so it’s a perfect fit! Right now, I am working to strengthen and improve what we have built at Spotty Dog Brewery & Taphouse to ensure we are working in the best way to continue producing quality products and customer experiences.

Honestly though, as a small business owner you jump in and get involved with anything and everything that needs doing. I love it. One day it might be greeting guests to celebrate a special occasion; or on another day it could be pouring a beer or moving a keg, working behind the scenes on those tasks that no one sees, or watching the brood of kids while someone else is working!

We have to ask, what is your favourite beer?

That’s a tough one. I like to try different beers but I’ve only been drinking Spotty lately! My favourite is our Westerway Raspberry Sour, the sweet and tart flavours are perfect for summer. I also love seeing “non-beer drinkers” trying it and loving it too, it’s so satisfying! I am also very into our Biergartenwetter (No. 2 in our lager series) because it reminds me of European holidays.

It has been very rewarding to witness our beer broaden in variety and taste, and the quality just keeps getting better.

What makes working alongside women unique?

I am fortunate to be surrounded by intelligent, committed, and understanding women in my workplaces. Working with women who want to listen and share ideas, support each other to flourish, and celebrate any and all wins is uplifting. It makes me feel valued and included.

At Spotty, I work with my sister Domonie. Yes, we may set up displays blasting a bit of Swiftie and have three different conversations rolled into one while working, but we pour all our energy into the business. It’s pretty special to work with someone who is attune to subtle nuances and motivates you to succeed individually and for your business.

From the very start we have strived to build an organisation that values inclusion and equality, to work with diversity and be continually inspired to grow and be better.

What does the theme for International Women’s Day 2024 “Inspire Inclusion” mean to you?

We should always celebrate difference and be inclusive of all voices, values, and backgrounds. It empowers us to be more aware of what is happening around us, how others perceive or feel, and potentially be more accepting of things that make us feel uncomfortable.

The act of making a difference can feel overwhelming, but every major change starts with a small step. That is something everyone can work towards through listening to others, learning from others, and speaking up for those who may not be in a position to do so.

Let’s continue celebrating the ongoing strength, influence and tireless determination of women and those who identify women. Happy International Women’s day 💜
